Nigerian People

National House of Reps

A new bill before Nigeria’s House of Representatives seeks to criminalize bribery in both public and private workplaces. The proposed law stipulates penalties of up to 7 years imprisonment or a ₦5 million fine for offenders. Public officials face harsher penalties, including dismissal and a 15-year ban from holding public office.

The bill, sponsored by Hon. Paul Nnamchi and other lawmakers, seeks to impose stringent penalties on individuals found guilty of soliciting or accepting bribes in professional settings.

Key Provisions of the Proposed Bill

Penalties for Workplace Bribery: Individuals convicted of engaging in bribery within the workplace may face up to seven years of imprisonment or a fine of ₦5 million.

Enhanced Sanctions for Public Officials: Public servants found guilty of such offenses could be subjected to additional penalties, including dismissal from service and a 15-year ban from holding any public office.
